Like it or not, admit it or otherwise, it is human nature to judge others by appearances – hence the precautionary proverb: Do not judge a book by its cover.
In fact, Face Reading is something that seems to be ingrained within us, since birth. Not so surprising, perhaps, considering the fact that most of our judgment of our surroundings and other people are derived from our visual senses – our eyes – and that the face is usually the most uncovered part of the human body.
And while it may be fairly obvious, it cannot be emphasized enough that while CVs may be exaggerated and credentials may be faked…the face simply does NOT lie.
Welcome to the intriguing, fascinating world of Chinese Face Reading…Mian Xiang!
What’s in a Face? Everything!
As one of the time-tested Five Arts (Wu Xing) of Chinese Metaphysics, Face Reading – or Mian Xiang - falls under the
study of the physiognomy of the features, contours, shapes and even hues of the face. To the Chinese, however, a person’s face is
more than what he or she shows the world; it’s also a virtual map of this person’s potential and destiny in life.
We are talking about an ancient art with a prestigious lineage that predates to the time of the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di; circa 2,500 BC). Back then, candidates coveting imperial positions were not required to submit their resumes; what they did instead was to submit their BaZi (Four Pillars of Destiny) Chart, to be assessed by imperial advisers.
Now, a BaZi Chart maps the Qi or energy patterns present during the exact moment of a person’s birth…but then again, BaZi Charts can always be ‘doctored’ to make them more superior, right? So how did the imperial advisers ascertain whether a
potential candidate indeed possessed the requisite qualifications for a particular post?
By looking at his face, of course.

The impromptu tool of Emperors & Commoners alike
In a similar vein, the emperors of ancient China would utilize Mian Xiang to assess friend and foe alike. So important was the role of Mian Xiang; that Chinese Metaphysical advisers to the Dragon Throne would inevitably have to present a detailed
‘Mian Xiang’ report on a particular individual’s character, potential and destiny to the emperor, whenever an analysis was requested.
Of course, the days of the Chinese emperors and their exploits are but pages consigned to history books, today. But perhaps just
as well this metaphysical science has spilled over, from being just the sole privilege of royalty and nobility…to the common person
on-the-street. Today, Mian Xiang is widely-utilized by people from all walks and backgrounds of life; from rulers and
politicians, to movie and sports stars…from business tycoons to the average wage-earner, and from the keen enthusiast to the
curious housewife – who wishes to gain a better insight into her loved ones’ characters!
We live in a world where progress and advance are being made at unprecedented – even frightening – speeds. And there is simply
no telling what tomorrow will bring, or the consequences of our liaisons or interactions with other people.
But we can always better prepare ourselves to interact more successfully with others – given that no person is an island entirely unto him / herself – with ONE tool: Mian Xiang. |

While the answer to this question should be rather obvious, there’s no harm in delving a little deeper into it.
