Remedy Of Choice: Aquariums

Water is a versatile tool of the feng shui consultant because it is not only an activating force, but water generally produces quicker and more immediate results.

It is also very easy to deploy and can be used with or without the need for any renovation or alterations to a property. For a Feng Shui consultant, Water can be the first choice or last line of defense to remedy a Feng Shui situation.

Water is one half of the system - the other being Wind - that makes up Feng Shui. It is true that Water, as an element, is an extremely important aspect of Chinese Metaphysics. In Feng Shui and to a larger degree Metaphysics, everything comes down to the basic principle of Yin and Yang and its concept of Balance between the two. The significance of Water in Feng Shui is related to its Yang quality.

It plays the role of accumulating, collecting and gathering Qi. Where there is Water, is where the Qi stops. When Qi stops, it collects and accumulates. In the same vein, Water can also be used to barricade, direct and redirect, as well as to retain or hold in Sheng Qi (Positive) and diffuse or neutralize Sha Qi (Negative) appropriately.

As a Yang component in Feng Shui, Water's role naturally also relates to activation or movement. It is therefore to activate, circulate and move the Qi. In itself, Water does not emit Qi. Only Mountains, the Yin component of Feng Shui, produce and emit Qi. Thus, Mountains produce the Qi, the Wind carries it down, and the Water collects, activates and gives movement to the Qi.

When prescribing a Water solution, a Feng Shui consultant would suggest an aquarium rather than a water feature or some other water-storage receptacle. Why? First of all, aquariums are aesthetically pleasing. Think about it: Would you rather have an aquarium to look at, or a big bucket of water?

Aquariums are transparent and usually open at the top, which fulfills the need for the Water to be both seen and exposed. It also enable the Water to be kept active by placing fish - or simply, a water pump in the tank - to keep the Water active, maintaining the movement of the Qi in the area.

Another reason is that aquariums can be easily installed anywhere without any renovation issues and does not pose much maintenance problems in keeping it clean.

As a rule, any Internal Water Feature must take into account some considerations such as its size and depth, maintenance and that it has an exposed surface area.

For aquariums, as a rule of thumb, any property between 800 to 1000 square feet would need an aquarium that is a minimum size of three feet by three feet. A larger property accordingly would need a bigger tank. This is, practically, a cheap and pleasant option as opposed to installing fancy-schmancy, expensive water features.

But why not a vase of water instead? Well, in general, if your vase cannot hold three litres of water in it, then it will not do much for the Qi in your property. A normal flower vase does not usually hold enough water or have a wide enough surface area to be effective for the purposes of activating Qi. A vase is typically more useful if you want to activate a particular Flying Star, such as the #4.

Before you head out to buy an aquarium, it is highly recommended to consult a Feng Shui professional to do a proper evaluation for Water placement of your property first to ensure it is done right to your benefit.
